• The Volvo XC70 high beam headlight uses the H9 bulb across the 2006-2016 model years when fitted with halogen capsule headlamps, with the sole exception of 2004-2005, which use the 9005 bulb instead. The H9 operates at 12V and 65W and follows the ECE standard, sharing that wattage rating with the 9005 but differing in base type: the H9 uses a PGJ19-5 base, while the 9005 uses a P20d base. These two bulbs are not interchangeable despite their identical wattage.
• The 9005 bulb, specified for the 2003-2004 XC70 high beam, is an ANSI-standard single-filament halogen type developed for the North American market. Its P20d base is physically distinct from the ECE-standard bases used on H-series bulbs, which means it cannot be substituted with an H9 or any other ECE halogen type without modification.
• The D1S bulb is specified for the low beam on XC70 models with HID headlamps from 2007-2016. It operates at 85V and 35W and incorporates an integral ignitor within the bulb unit itself, which is designed for projector-type housings. Because the ignitor is built in, D1S bulbs are not compatible with housings designed for D2-series bulbs, which require a separate external ignitor.
• The D2R bulb is specified for the low beam on HID-equipped XC70 models from 2004-2006. Like the D1S, it operates at 85V and 35W, but it uses a P32d-3 base and requires an external ignitor. The D2R is also designed specifically for reflector-type housings, and its coating distinguishes it from the D2S variant intended for projector housings. D1S and D2R bulbs are not interchangeable.
• The low beam halogen specification for the Volvo XC70 changed between the 2006 and 2014 model years. The H11 bulb, rated at 12V and 55W with a PGJ19-2 base, is specified for halogen low beams from 2005-2013. For 2004 and again for 2014-2016, the H7 bulb is specified instead. The H7 also runs at 12V and 55W but uses a PX26d base, making it physically incompatible with H11 sockets.
• The H7 bulb serves dual roles in the XC70 specification. It appears as the low beam halogen bulb for 2004 and 2014-2016, and separately as the high beam bulb on HID-equipped models from 2007-2016. Although the same bulb type is used in both positions on certain configurations, the two positions use different housings and are not functionally interchangeable within the vehicle.
• All HID bulbs listed across the XC70 specifications, both D1S and D2R, operate at 85V and 35W. This high operating voltage is a defining characteristic of HID discharge technology and requires dedicated ballast circuitry. These bulbs cannot be installed in halogen housings, and halogen bulbs cannot serve as replacements in HID housings without a complete system conversion.
• The H9, H7, and H11 bulbs are all ECE-standard single-filament halogen types, and all three are also approved for use in the United States. Despite sharing a 12V operating voltage, their base types differ: PGJ19-5 for H9, PX26d for H7, and PGJ19-2 for H11. These differing bases mean that none of the three are directly interchangeable with one another, even where wattage ratings overlap.
