The H5001 and H5006 are sealed beam units, meaning the lens, reflector, and filament are fused into a single assembly. When the filament fails, the entire unit requires replacement rather than an internal bulb swap.
The Volvo VHD used H5001 sealed beam units for high beam and H5006 sealed beam units for low beam across the 2001-2015 model years, with both positions operating at 12V.
The H5001 is a 4-inch square sealed beam unit, while the H5006 is a 5.75-inch round sealed beam unit. These two form factors are not interchangeable with each other or with halogen capsule bulbs.
For the 2016-2017 model years, the Volvo VHD introduced an alternative headlamp configuration. Vehicles equipped with halogen capsule headlamps use the 9007 bulb for both high and low beam positions, while vehicles with sealed beam headlamps continue to use the H5001 and H5006 respectively.
The 9007 is a dual-filament halogen bulb, meaning a single bulb contains separate filaments for high and low beam functions. It operates on a PX29t base at 12V, with a rated output of 65W on high beam and 55W on low beam.
Because the 9007 serves both beam functions in a single unit, it is not interchangeable with the H5001 or H5006 sealed beam units, which are dedicated to a single beam position each.
All three bulb types, the 9007, H5001, and H5006, conform to ANSI standards applicable in the United States and Canada, and all operate at 12V.
