Toyota Matrix high beam headlight bulbs use 9005 size while low beam headlight bulbs use 9006 size. The replacement chart covers vehicle production years spanning 2003 to 2013 with corresponding bulb size specifications.
The year-by-year compatibility chart below provides a quick reference to verify the correct bulb size for your vehicle.
The Toyota Matrix uses the 9005 bulb for high beam headlights across all model years from 2003-2013, and the 9006 bulb for low beam headlights across that same production span.
Both the 9005 and 9006 are ANSI-standardized halogen bulb types recognized in the United States and Canada, meaning they conform to a defined set of electrical and physical specifications rather than being proprietary fitments.
The 9005 is a single-filament halogen bulb rated at 12 volts and 65 watts, mounted on a P20d base. The higher wattage reflects its role in producing the stronger output required for high beam operation.
The 9006 is also a single-filament halogen bulb rated at 12 volts but draws 55 watts, and it uses a P22d base. The lower wattage corresponds to the reduced output used for low beam illumination.
Although the 9005 and 9006 share a similar appearance, their bases differ: the P20d base on the 9005 and the P22d base on the 9006 are not interchangeable. Physically, the locking tabs on each bulb are positioned differently, which prevents cross-installation between the two positions.
Because both bulb types are single-filament designs, each serves only one lighting function. A dual-filament bulb, by contrast, would handle both high and low beam duties from a single unit, which is not the case here.
The consistent use of 9005 and 9006 across all eleven model years of the Toyota Matrix means that replacement bulbs sourced for any year within the 2003-2013 range are electrically and physically equivalent to those required by any other year in that range.
