• The 9005 bulb is the most consistently specified high beam type across the Toyota Land Cruiser range, covering model years 1991-2015 without interruption except for 2012. It is a single-filament halogen bulb operating at 12V and 65W, fitted with a P20d base, and follows the ANSI standard used in the United States and Canada.
• The low beam side of the Toyota Land Cruiser shows three distinct halogen bulb types across its history. The 9006, rated at 12V and 55W with a P22d base, covers model years 1991-2007. The H11, also rated at 12V and 55W but using a PGJ19-2 base, applies to 2008-2011. Although both share the same wattage rating, their bases are physically different and the two types are not interchangeable.
• The D4S bulb is specified for the low beam position in 2013-2015. Unlike the halogen types used in earlier years, the D4S is a mercury-free HID xenon discharge bulb that operates at 42V and 35W, uses a P32d-5 base, and is designed specifically for projector-type housings. Its operating voltage and ignition requirements make it incompatible with standard halogen sockets.
• From 1969-1987, both the high beam and low beam positions on the Land Cruiser used sealed beam units rather than replaceable bulbs. The H6024 is a 7-inch round sealed beam unit specified for both positions across those years. When a sealed beam fails, the entire unit is replaced rather than an individual bulb.
• The 1988-1990 model years represent a transitional period in which rectangular 4x6-inch sealed beam units replaced the earlier round H6024 format. The high beam position used the H4651 across all three years, while the low beam position varied: H4656 in 1988 and 1990, and H4652 in 1989. The H4652 is a variant of the H4651, and these units are not interchangeable with one another despite sharing the same physical form factor.
• The 9005 and 9006 bulbs, while similar in appearance and both following the ANSI standard, use different bases and serve different functions. The 9005 carries a P20d base and is rated at 65W for high beam use, while the 9006 uses a P22d base and is rated at 55W for low beam use. The base designs incorporate physical keys that prevent cross-installation between the two types.
• The H11 bulb follows the ECE standard, which governs lighting regulations across Europe and much of the world, though it also holds approval for use in the United States. This contrasts with the 9006 it replaced in the low beam position, which is an ANSI-standard type specific to the North American market.
• The low beam specification for the Land Cruiser shifted from the ANSI-standard 9006 to the ECE-standard H11 between the 2007 and 2008 model years, and then again from H11 to the HID D4S between the 2011 and 2013 model years. Each of these transitions involved a change in both the bulb technology and the socket type, meaning parts from adjacent model year groups are not interchangeable.
