Both the 9005 and 9006 are ANSI-standardized halogen bulbs recognized in the United States and Canada, meaning they conform to a defined set of electrical and physical specifications rather than being proprietary fitments.
The 9005 is a single-filament halogen bulb operating at 12V and 65W, fitted with a P20d base. Single-filament construction means the bulb serves one lighting function only, in this case high beam output.
The 9006 is also a single-filament halogen bulb at 12V but rated at 55W, with a P22d base. The lower wattage relative to the 9005 reflects its role as the low beam source, which is designed for closer, wider illumination rather than long-range projection.
The P20d base on the 9005 and the P22d base on the 9006 are physically distinct from one another. These differing base types mean the two bulbs are not interchangeable, even though both are single-filament 12V halogens used in the same vehicle.
