Peterbilt 587 headlight bulbs include 9005XS for high beam and H11 or D2S for low beam sizes. The replacement chart covers 2011 through 2018 vehicle production years with bulb specifications.
The year-by-year compatibility chart below provides a quick reference to verify the correct bulb size for your vehicle.
The Peterbilt 587 uses the 9005XS bulb for the high beam headlight across all model years from 2011-2018. The 9005XS is a compact variant of the standard 9005 halogen bulb, sharing the same P20d base and electrical ratings but built with a shorter overall length to fit housings with tighter clearance behind the bulb socket.
The low beam headlight on the 587 (2011-2018) accommodates two distinct bulb types depending on the headlamp system installed at the factory: the H11 for halogen capsule headlamps and the D2S for HID headlamps. These two types are not interchangeable, as they operate on fundamentally different electrical and ignition systems.
The H11 is a single-filament halogen bulb with a PGJ19-2 base, rated at 12 volts and typically 55 watts. It is a plug-and-play replacement that draws power directly from the vehicle's standard low-voltage circuit without requiring additional components.
The D2S is a high-intensity discharge bulb designed for projector-style HID headlamp housings. It requires a ballast to generate the high-voltage arc needed to produce light, meaning the D2S cannot function in a halogen housing and vice versa. The "S" designation in D2S specifically indicates compatibility with projector housings, as opposed to the D2R, which is intended for reflector housings.
Because the 587 was offered with either halogen or HID low beam headlamps depending on the configuration ordered, confirming which headlamp system is physically installed is necessary before selecting a replacement low beam bulb. Installing an H11 in a vehicle equipped with HID hardware, or a D2S in one with halogen hardware, would result in a non-functional headlamp.
The 9005XS used for the high beam does not share a base or socket type with either the H11 or the D2S used for the low beam. Each of the three bulb types in this specification set requires its own dedicated socket, so cross-position substitution is not possible.
