• The Mini Cooper Paceman (2013-2016) uses two distinct headlight systems across its production run: halogen capsule headlamps fitted with the 9008 bulb and HID headlamps fitted with the D1S bulb. Both systems apply equally to the high beam and low beam positions.
• The 9008 is a dual-filament halogen bulb rated at 12V with a 65W high beam filament and a 55W low beam filament. Its single-bulb, dual-filament design allows it to serve both beam functions within one housing, which is why it appears in both the high beam and low beam positions.
• The 9008 carries the ANSI standard designation, meaning it is the specification used in the United States and Canada. It uses a P26t base type.
• The D1S is a high-intensity discharge bulb that operates on xenon gas at 85V and 35W. Unlike the halogen option, it requires a projector-type housing and incorporates an integral ignitor within the bulb assembly itself.
• The D1S follows the ECE standard, which governs lighting regulations in Europe and other markets worldwide. It uses a PK32d-2 base type.
• Because the 9008 and D1S serve the same headlight positions but belong to entirely different electrical and optical systems, they are not interchangeable. A vehicle fitted with HID projector housings requires the D1S, while one fitted with halogen capsule housings requires the 9008.
• The integral ignitor on the D1S distinguishes it from other HID bulb types that rely on a separate external ignitor module. Substituting a D1S with an HID bulb lacking this integrated component would be incompatible with the system design.
• The operating voltage difference between the two bulb types is substantial: the 9008 runs on a standard 12V automotive circuit, while the D1S requires 85V, which is generated by a dedicated ballast unit present only in HID-equipped vehicles.
