Mercury Sable high beam and low beam headlight bulbs utilize 9005, 9007, 9004, and H11 sizes depending on model generation, with the bulb specifications varying across different production iterations. The replacement chart covers 1986 through 2009 model years and documents the corresponding bulb size requirements for each generation.
The year-by-year compatibility chart below provides a quick reference to verify the correct bulb size for your vehicle.
The 9007 bulb is a dual-filament halogen type operating at 12V with a 65W high beam filament and a 55W low beam filament, fitted with a PX29t base. In the Mercury Sable, this single bulb serves both the high beam and low beam functions across the 1996-1999 model years, meaning one bulb per housing handles both lighting modes.
Because the 9007 handles both beam functions in a single housing, replacing only the high beam or only the low beam is not possible independently on 1996-1999 models. Both functions are lost when the bulb fails.
The 9004 bulb is also a dual-filament halogen type at 12V, with a 65W high beam filament and a 45W low beam filament, using a P29t base. The 1986 Sable uses this bulb for both beam positions, following the same single-bulb-per-housing arrangement as the 9007 years.
Although the 9004 and 9007 are both dual-filament halogen bulbs sharing similar wattage ratings, their bases differ. The P29t base of the 9004 and the PX29t base of the 9007 are not interchangeable, and substituting one for the other is not supported by the specifications.
The 2008-2009 Sable uses a split-bulb headlight system, where the 9005 handles the high beam and the H11 handles the low beam as separate, independent bulbs.
The 9005 is a single-filament halogen bulb rated at 12V and 65W with a P20d base, conforming to the ANSI standard used in the US and Canada. Its single filament means it is dedicated exclusively to high beam operation.
The H11 is a single-filament halogen bulb rated at 12V and 55W, fitted with a PGJ19-2 base. It conforms to the ECE standard but carries US approval as well. On 2008-2009 models, it is the designated low beam bulb.
The P20d base of the 9005 and the PGJ19-2 base of the H11 are distinct and non-interchangeable, meaning the high beam and low beam positions on 2008-2009 models require separate, position-specific bulbs.
