Mazda CX-9 high beam and low beam headlight bulbs utilize sizes D4S, 9005, and H11 depending on configuration. The replacement chart covers 2007 to 2017 model years with corresponding bulb size specifications.
The year-by-year compatibility chart below provides a quick reference to verify the correct bulb size for your vehicle.
The 9005 bulb is the most frequently specified type across the Mazda CX-9 headlight data, appearing in high beam positions from 2007-2012 and in the low beam position for 2016-2017, as well as in halogen high beam configurations for 2013-2015. It is a single-filament halogen bulb operating at 65 watts, commonly used in high beam applications.
The H11 bulb appears consistently as the low beam halogen option from 2007-2015. It is a single-filament halogen bulb rated at 55 watts and uses a pgj19-2 base, making it incompatible with 9005 sockets despite both being halogen types.
The D4S is a high-intensity discharge bulb that operates without a separate ignition module, as the ballast is integrated into the socket assembly. It is specified for both high and low beam positions on CX-9 models equipped with HID headlamps from 2013-2015, and exclusively for the high beam in 2017.
The D2S bulb is an earlier HID type that requires an external ignition unit separate from the ballast. It is specified for low beam HID configurations on the CX-9 from 2007-2012, and was replaced in later model years by the D4S, which contains no mercury.
The 2017 Mazda CX-9 uses a D4S for the high beam and a 9005 for the low beam, a configuration that combines HID and halogen technology within the same headlight system. These two bulb types are not interchangeable with each other.
For 2013-2015, the CX-9 with HID headlamps uses the D4S for both high and low beam positions, while the halogen capsule variant uses the 9005 for high beam and H11 for low beam. Substituting between these two headlamp system types is not supported by the specifications.
The 2012 model year represents a transitional point in the low beam specifications, where D2S was used in HID-equipped vehicles while H11 served halogen variants, yet the high beam remained a single 9005 specification regardless of headlamp type.
D2S and D4S bulbs share the same physical base and can physically fit the same socket, but they differ in ignition voltage requirements. Using a D4S in a D2S-designed system, or vice versa, risks damage to the ballast or ignition unit and is not indicated as interchangeable within these specifications.
The 9005 and H11 bulbs, though both halogen types present in the same vehicle configurations, use different base designs and wattage ratings, and the specifications treat them as position-specific with no cross-compatibility implied between high and low beam sockets.
Across all years listed, the CX-9 headlight system is defined by the installed headlamp type rather than the model year alone for 2007-2015, meaning two vehicles of the same year may require entirely different bulb types depending on whether halogen capsule or HID headlamps were fitted at the factory.
