The H7 bulb is the most widely specified type across the Jaguar Vanden Plas headlight system, serving as both the high beam from 1998-2009 and the low beam from 1998-2003, as well as the low beam in halogen capsule headlamp configurations through 2008. It follows the ECE standard and uses a PX26d base, operating at 12V and 55W with a single filament.
The 1982-1989 Jaguar Vanden Plas used sealed beam units rather than replaceable bulbs. High beam positions used the H5001, a 4-inch square sealed beam unit, while low beam positions used the H5006, a 5.75-inch round sealed beam unit. In both cases, the entire housing assembly is the replaceable unit, not an individual bulb.
From 1990-1997, the high beam position transitioned to the 9005 bulb, an ANSI-standard single-filament halogen type with a P20d base rated at 12V and 65W. The corresponding low beam used the 9006, also ANSI-standard, with a P22d base at 12V and 55W.
The low beam circuit on the 2004-2008 Vanden Plas accommodated two distinct bulb types depending on headlamp configuration. Vehicles fitted with halogen capsule headlamps used the H7, while those fitted with HID headlamps required either the D1S (2004-2006) or D2S (2007-2008).
The D1S and D2S are both HID xenon discharge bulbs operating at 85V and 35W, intended for projector-type housings. A key technical distinction separates them: the D1S incorporates an integral ignitor within the bulb itself, using a PK32d-2 base, whereas the D2S requires a separate external ignitor and uses a P32d-2 base. These two types are not interchangeable.
The 2009 model year specifies the D2S exclusively for the low beam, with no halogen alternative listed, while retaining the H7 for the high beam position.
The 9005 and 9006 bulbs share the same ANSI standard and voltage rating but differ in wattage and base type. The 9005 uses a P20d base at 65W, and the 9006 uses a P22d base at 55W, making them physically and electrically non-interchangeable despite their similar appearance.
The H7 and 9006 bulbs both operate at 12V and 55W in the low beam position but follow different standards and use incompatible bases, the H7 with a PX26d base under ECE standards and the 9006 with a P22d base under ANSI standards, reflecting the shift in headlamp specification that occurred between the 1997 and 1998 model years.
