The Harley-Davidson FLHX Street Glide uses three distinct halogen bulb types across its headlight positions: H9, H11, and 9003. Each belongs to a different standardization system and carries different electrical and filament characteristics.
The 9003 bulb follows the ANSI standard used in the US and Canada. It is a dual-filament halogen bulb with a P43t base, rated at 12V and 60W/55W, where the higher wattage serves the high beam filament and the lower serves the low beam. Its dual-filament design means a single bulb handles both beam functions within one housing.
The H9 bulb follows the ECE standard, which governs lighting equipment across Europe and much of the world, though it also carries US approval. It is a single-filament halogen bulb with a PGJ19-5 base, rated at 12V and 65W. Because it has only one filament, it is dedicated to a single beam function per installation.
The H11 bulb also follows the ECE standard and shares the single-filament halogen construction, but uses a PGJ19-2 base and is rated at 12V and 55W. The base type differs from the H9, making the two bulbs physically non-interchangeable despite their similar appearance and voltage rating.
On the FLHX Street Glide, the 9003 bulb was used for both the high beam and low beam headlight positions from 2006-2013. Its dual-filament design allowed it to serve both functions across those model years.
From 2014 onward, the high beam and low beam positions transitioned to separate single-filament bulb types. The high beam used the H9 from 2014-2023, while the low beam used the H11 from 2014-2020, before also switching to the H9 in 2022-2023.
Because the H9 and H11 carry different base types (PGJ19-5 and PGJ19-2 respectively), a bulb from one type cannot be substituted for the other without a physical adapter, even though both are ECE-rated single-filament 12V halogen bulbs.
The shift from the dual-filament 9003 to separate single-filament H9 and H11 bulbs reflects a change in headlight housing design, where dedicated high and low beam housings replaced a shared-bulb configuration.
