The Chevrolet SS high beam headlight uses an H9 bulb size while the low beam headlight requires a D3S bulb size. The replacement chart covers vehicle production spanning 2014 to 2017.
The year-by-year compatibility chart below provides a quick reference to verify the correct bulb size for your vehicle.
ECE standard (Europe & worldwide). Mercury-free HID (xenon) discharge bulb with PK32d-5 base and integral ignitor, for projector-type housings. 42V, 35W.
The Chevrolet SS uses the H9 bulb for high beam headlights across all four model years covered by these specifications, from 2014-2017.
The H9 is a single-filament halogen bulb rated at 12V and 65W, built to the ECE standard used in Europe and worldwide, and also approved for use in the United States. It uses a PGJ19-5 base.
The low beam headlight position on the Chevrolet SS uses the D3S bulb across the full 2014-2017 model year range.
The D3S is a high-intensity discharge (HID) xenon bulb rated at 42V and 35W. Unlike standard HID bulbs, it incorporates an integral ignitor, which means the ignitor is built directly into the bulb unit rather than housed separately in the ballast circuit.
The D3S is formulated without mercury, distinguishing it from earlier HID bulb generations. It is designed specifically for projector-type headlight housings and uses a PK32d-5 base.
The H9 and D3S bases are not interchangeable. The PGJ19-5 base of the H9 and the PK32d-5 base of the D3S are physically distinct, and each bulb is engineered for a different headlight technology, halogen versus HID discharge.
Because the D3S includes an integral ignitor, substituting a D3S variant that lacks this built-in ignitor would be incompatible with the low beam circuit as specified for the SS.
