The Buick Envision high beam and low beam headlight bulbs utilize 9012 and D3S bulb sizes for optimal illumination. The replacement chart covers 2016 through 2020 model years with corresponding bulb size specifications.
The year-by-year compatibility chart below provides a quick reference to verify the correct bulb size for your vehicle.
ECE standard (Europe & worldwide). Mercury-free HID (xenon) discharge bulb with PK32d-5 base and integral ignitor, for projector-type housings. 42V, 35W.
The Buick Envision (2016-2020) uses two distinct headlight systems: halogen capsule headlamps fitted with the 9012 bulb, and HID headlamps fitted with the D3S bulb. Both the high beam and low beam positions share the same bulb type within each system.
The 9012 is a single-filament enhanced halogen bulb rated at 12V and 55W, built to the ANSI standard used in the United States and Canada. It uses a PX22d base.
The D3S is a mercury-free HID xenon discharge bulb rated at 42V and 35W, built to the ECE standard used in Europe and worldwide. It uses a PK32d-5 base and incorporates an integral ignitor, making it designed specifically for projector-type housings.
Because the 9012 and D3S operate on fundamentally different electrical and optical principles, halogen and HID headlamp assemblies on the Buick Envision are not interchangeable with one another.
The D3S bulb's integral ignitor is a built-in component rather than a separate part of the vehicle's wiring harness, which is a defining characteristic of the D3S standard that distinguishes it from other HID bulb types.
The 9012 bulb, while physically similar to the 9006 type, carries an enhanced halogen designation and is not rated as a direct substitute for standard 9006 fitments due to differences in output specification.
The PK32d-5 base of the D3S is keyed to prevent installation of non-mercury-free HID types such as the D1S or D2S, which use different base configurations and are incompatible with the Envision's HID housing.
