BMW Z8 high beam headlight bulbs use 9005 or 9011 size, while low beam headlight bulbs use D2S size. The replacement chart covers 2000 to 2003 model years with corresponding bulb size specifications.
The year-by-year compatibility chart below provides a quick reference to verify the correct bulb size for your vehicle.
The BMW Z8 uses two distinct headlight systems across its production run. The low beam position relies on the D2S bulb for all model years covered (2000-2003), while the high beam position varies by year.
The D2S is an HID (high-intensity discharge) xenon bulb operating at 85V and 35W. It follows the ECE standard and carries a P32d-2 base designed specifically for projector-type housings. Unlike halogen bulbs, it requires an external ignitor to initiate the arc discharge that produces light.
For the high beam position, the 2001-2003 BMW Z8 fitted with halogen capsule headlamps takes the 9005 bulb. This is a single-filament halogen bulb rated at 12V and 65W, built to the ANSI standard applicable in the US and Canada, and uses a P20d base.
The year 2000 Z8 uses the 9011 bulb in the high beam position rather than the 9005. Although both share the same 12V, 65W rating and ANSI standard classification, the 9011 is an enhanced halogen type and carries a PX20d base, which differs physically from the P20d base of the 9005.
The base difference between the 9005 (P20d) and the 9011 (PX20d) means the two bulbs are not interchangeable, despite their identical voltage and wattage ratings. Substituting one for the other in the high beam socket is not supported by the fitment data.
The halogen capsule headlamp qualifier listed against the 2001-2003 high beam entries indicates that the 9005 fitment applies only to vehicles equipped with that specific headlamp configuration, implying an alternative headlamp type existed for those years.
