The D1S and D2S bulbs are both HID (xenon) discharge types rated at 85V and 35W, meaning they produce light through an electrical arc between tungsten electrodes in a xenon gas-filled quartz tube rather than through a heated filament. Despite sharing the same wattage rating, the two types are not interchangeable, as the D1S integrates its ignitor directly into the bulb base while the D2S requires a separate external ignitor unit.
The D1S uses a PK32d-2 base and the D2S uses a P32d-2 base. These base configurations are physically distinct, which prevents cross-installation between the two types even when the wattage and voltage ratings are identical.
Both HID types are designed exclusively for projector-type headlight housings. Installing an HID bulb in a reflector housing produces uncontrolled light scatter that reduces visibility and increases glare for oncoming traffic.
The H7 is a single-filament halogen bulb rated at 12V and 55W, fitted with a PX26d base. It operates on standard automotive voltage and does not require a ballast or ignitor, unlike the D1S and D2S types.
The BMW Z4 (2009-2016) uses the D1S for both high beam and low beam functions, indicating that the headlight system for those model years relies entirely on HID technology across both beam positions.
For the 2003-2008 Z4, the high beam position uses only the H7 halogen bulb regardless of headlight system type, while the low beam position varies by headlight configuration, with halogen capsule headlamps taking the H7 and HID headlamps taking the D2S.
The H7 bulb carries approval under ECE standards and is also approved for use in the United States and Japan, giving it broader regulatory acceptance than many other bulb types in the ECE family.
On 2003-2008 Z4 models equipped with HID headlamps, the low beam D2S bulb requires a functioning external ignitor to initiate the high-voltage arc needed to start the discharge. A failed ignitor will prevent the bulb from lighting even if the bulb itself is undamaged.
