The BMW M3 uses D1S across both high and low beam positions for the 2008-2013 and 2015-2018 model years.
• The D2S bulb shares the same 85V, 35W operating profile as the D1S but uses a P32d-2 base and lacks an integrated ignitor. Despite their similar electrical ratings, D1S and D2S bulbs are not interchangeable due to differences in base configuration and ignitor arrangement. The BMW M3 uses D2S for both high and low beam positions in the 2002-2006 model years, where HID headlamps are fitted.
• For the 2002-2006 model years, the BMW M3 lists both a D2S and an H7 fitment for the same beam position, conditional on headlamp type. • The 9005 and 9006 are ANSI-standard single-filament halogen bulbs used in the BMW M3 from 1988-1991 and 1995-1999. The 9005, rated at 12V and 65W with a P20d base, serves the high beam position, while the 9006, rated at 12V and 55W with a P22d base, serves the low beam. Although physically similar, the two types use different base configurations and are not interchangeable between positions.
• The 1990-1991 BMW M3 uses sealed beam units rather than replaceable bulbs. The H5001 is a 4-inch square sealed beam unit used in the high beam position, and the H5006 is a 5.75-inch round sealed beam unit used in the low beam position. Both operate at 12V. Installing one type in a housing designed for the other is not supported by the specifications.
