PY21W is an ECE-standard single-filament amber bulb also rated at 12V and 21W, but it uses a BAU15s bayonet base rather than the BA15s base of the P21W. The offset pin arrangement of the BAU15s base physically prevents incorrect installation of a clear P21W in a socket intended for an amber PY21W.
Because the BA15s and BAU15s bases are not interchangeable, substituting a P21W for a PY21W, or vice versa, is not a direct plug-in swap. The differing pin offsets mean the wrong bulb will not seat correctly in the opposing socket type.
The 12496 is a Philips/Osram part number designating a 12V halogen bulb for specialty applications. In these specifications, it serves as the clear-lens turn signal bulb for certain years, functioning in the same role as the PY21W in other years.
For the front turn signal with a clear lens, the R1200C uses PY21W in 1996-1997 and 2004-2005, while 1998-2003 models use the 12496 instead, indicating that two distinct amber bulb solutions cover the clear-lens front position across the production run.
The rear turn signal with a clear lens shows a more varied pattern, with the 12496 specified for 1996, 2001-2002, and 2005, while PY21W covers 1997-2000, 2003, and 2004, meaning neither bulb type holds an unbroken run across all rear clear-lens years.
The lens configuration present on the motorcycle, whether clear or non-clear, is a determining factor in bulb selection for the R1200C. Installing a clear P21W bulb behind a clear lens would result in a white-appearing turn signal rather than the amber output required by ECE regulations.
All three bulb types specified for the R1200C operate on a 12V electrical system, and the PY21W and P21W both share a 21W power rating, meaning the load on the turn signal circuit remains consistent regardless of which of those two types is fitted.
