Audi A5 Sportback headlight bulbs include 9006, H8, and D5S sizes for high beam and D5S for low beam replacement. The chart covers 2018 to 2024 production years with corresponding bulb size specifications.
The year-by-year compatibility chart below provides a quick reference to verify the correct bulb size for your vehicle.
The 9006 bulb, used in the Audi A5 Sportback for the high beam headlight in 2023-2024, is a single-filament halogen type operating at 12V and 55W, built to the ANSI standard applicable in the US and Canada, and fitted with a P22d base.
The H8 bulb is a single-filament halogen type operating at 12V and 35W, built to the ECE standard used in Europe and worldwide, and fitted with a PGJ19-1 base. Despite its ECE origin, it carries approval for use in the US as well.
The D5S bulb is an HID (xenon) gas discharge type operating at 12V and 25W, built to the ECE standard, and fitted with a PK32d-7 base. Its low-voltage compact design distinguishes it from higher-wattage HID types.
The D5S is the most consistently specified bulb across the A5 Sportback range, appearing in the low beam position for 2018-2019, 2021, and 2023-2024, as well as in the high beam position for select 2018-2019 configurations.
The 9006 and H8 are not interchangeable. Their base types differ, with the 9006 using a P22d base and the H8 using a PGJ19-1 base, and their wattage ratings also differ at 55W and 35W respectively.
The H8 and D5S are not interchangeable. The H8 is a halogen bulb while the D5S is an HID discharge bulb, and the two types require fundamentally different operating systems within the vehicle.
For the 2019 high beam position, the applicable bulb type depends on the headlamp system installed. Vehicles with HID headlamps take a D5S, while halogen and gas discharge D5/D7 system variants take an H8.
The 2020 high beam specification for the H8 bulb carries three distinct conditions: fitment to the all-weather light position, absence of special upgrade measures, and the presence of gas discharge headlamps under the D5/D7 system.
The 9006 bulb is specified only for the high beam position in 2023-2024 and does not appear in any low beam position across the A5 Sportback specifications.
The H8 bulb appears exclusively in the high beam position across the 2019-2021 model years, with no corresponding presence in the low beam specifications.
The base types across the three bulb families are entirely distinct, meaning no cross-substitution is physically possible without modification to the socket or housing.
At 25W, the D5S draws significantly less power than the 9006 at 55W, despite the D5S producing the higher light output characteristic of HID technology.
